The Greatest Gift

On December 12 – 16 will be giving our Christmas gift to our community is to share the meaning of Christmas is that God came to earth. We have a free drive-thru nativity with 13 scene’s beginning with the Angel coming to Mary to tell her she would give birth to the Messiah – all the way to the Cross and Empty Tomb. We get calls and emails from families all of the triad that have shared “we begin our Christmas every year with the Drive-thru Live nativity at Life Community…”.
For this event to be successful we have a team that constructs the set during the week preceding the event, during the “Greatest Gift” we have about 45 animals (sheep, goats, donkey’s, cattle and Camels) and need between 50 -80 people each night to transform the parking lot into a first century experience. Then when we finish the week we have a tear down team that help’s us clean up and put things away.

Special Needs Prom Friday May 18, 2012

This will be our second year providing a special night for the special needs students in Guilford County High Schools or Carriers. We have invited the nearly 500 students and will have all the RSVP’s by May 4. Our theme for the year is “Hitting Broadway” and we will include a free “Canal Street Experience” during the morning and afternoon on the 1st as well. It is not formal but we are calling it a “dress up event” so that anyone can feel comfortable from a jacket or dress all the way up to a prom dress and tux. Parents are encouraged to stay.

For the “Canal Street Experience” (beginning at 8AM by appointment and on a first come first served basis) Life Community will be partnering with community organizations to provide these services for free:

For the ladies: hair-doo, makeover, manicure, pedicure, corsage and even a “loaner dress” (as available).

For the guys: haircut, show shine, and boutonniere and even a “loaner jacket” (as available).

For both: When participants arrive for the prom we will have them dropped off for a Limo ride. Limo Rides around the church circle (from the corner of the building by Barry’s office around the loop and pull up to the front door for a “Red Carpet Entry”

When our guest leave the limo each one will experience the red carpet runway, an announcement “Ladies and Gentleman may I present to you Mr. or Miss….” followed by paparazzi style photos. They will then come to the foyer decorated like Broadway where we will have NYC style street entertainers (mimes, clowns, music, dancing etc.) and then to the auditorium decorated like Radio City Music Hall; Central Park, City scape and Times Square – where we will have dancing, finger food, tables and photographers. A night on the town to remember for all.

Opportunities for Ministry: We need Volunteers and or products for all the Canal Street Experience, dresses or jackets to be loaned out to participants, medical help on site, restaurants for the discounts, decorators, setup , tear down/clean up, photographers, entertainers, food servers (in central park) help getting Limo’s, smiling faces etc.

We are making a “Life Community and Community Partners” program to thank all those companies that donated to make this night so great for these families.

Home to Home Ministries

What: Home to home partners with the local church to make an undeniable witness in the community by providing basic needs to the poor, disaster victims (house fire etc) or those beginning a new life. Home to home is a small group of local Christians who believe God can and will move significantly in this and all communities. This movement is all about Christians, in response to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, taking action in a manner to demonstrate a powerful witness of Jesus Christ having as its focus those among us most in need. God has called Home To Home to encourage and assist His faithful to engage the most needy of our communities with a more visible witness that all the world may see Jesus and take note.

Urban Ministry Semi Annual Community Food Drive at Food Lion

2 times a year we join many local churches in staffing food drive’s at local grocery stores. We man the Food Lion at 118 Main St in Jamestown from 9 AM until 6 PM then we load it all up into a couple of trucks and deliver it to Urban Ministries on Lee Street in High Point. With a date in the spring and a date in the fall Urban raises more food for their ministry these 2 days than the 363 other days combined.

It is a very easy ministry to be a part of. The commitment is for 2 adults to be at the store for 2 hours at a time. Urban runs ads in the news paper telling the community of the opportunity – our volunteers stand at the doors passing out a small sheet of paper from urban with a list of needs – as customers go into the store they can purchase some of the items and drop them in the box as they leave.

The Spring date is Saturday, March 31, 2012

This Fall our date is Saturday, September 17. 2012

Opportunities: Timeslots are 9-11AM, 11AM-1PM, 1-3PM, 3-5PM, 5-6PM plus load the trucks (and 2 to bring trucks at 5:30 and deliver the food to Urban). If you want to participate email barry@life-community.com to be scheduled for a timeslot.

Hope for Brazil

What: Since 1998 Lyn Sloop has been leading team to Brazil – partnering with the local pastors Hope for Brazil has built 19 churches for the locals to worship and reach their communities from. Over these years Hope for Brazil has seen God bless and add to their ministry by giving opportunities to: Build the church, Children’s Bible Clubs, Basketball Ministry, Women’s Outreach, Clothing and Food distribution to the needy, and hopefully this year add a medical team to the trip.

“God So Loves the World” Refugee Banquet

On Wednesday Night February 9 we will be hosting many refugee’s brought the the United States by World Relief. Last Year alone World Relief of High Point relocated over 600 refugee’s to the Triad area. This is our 4th Annual Refugee banquet.

Each of these families have been in the US for less than 6 months, they are trying to learn the language, get a job, and begin to meet the requirements placed on them to stay here in the US. We want to come along side of them and let them know that God and Life Community loves them “no strings attached”.

We have asked them for 3 pressing family needs. Many list a computer, TV, microwave, furniture, bicycle, DVD player, or maybe washer/dryer. The TV or computer is a vital tool for learning the language, the bike for transportation, the washer/dryer helps them be able to stay at home and do laundry instead of taking the whole family to the laundry mat on public transportation etc.

We then partner each refugee family with 2 families from Life Community. We try to meet at least 2 of those 3 needs. The items do not need to be new or even purchased – we just ask that they be in good working order.

The way the night works ….

We pick the families up in buses and bring them to Life Community (the foyer looks like an airport – our families holding signs with the refugee families names on them) we connect you with them, and then we will take a picture of the family so that we can give it to them at the end of the night – we go in the auditorium for the meal (we provide rice and chicken and ask classes to bring stir-fry veggies and seasoned roasted potatoes). Our families sit with their family at the table (we try to provide a sheet with 20-25 basic words/phrases in their languages). We then have a mission trip drama that we do that illustrates God’s story from creation to the cross. We then give them the picture in a frame and our Life Community Families take the refugee family back to the refugee families home and give them the gifts. It is such a blessing to the families and many of our families have chosen to stay connected all year long.

God is bringing the World to the Triad and we need to demonstrate His love to them the way it has been demonstrated to us by Christ.

Coats and Covers for Refugees and the local Homeless

From Thanksgiving until Christmas we are collecting used coats and/or covers for the needy and the cold in the Triad. Many refugee’s move here with no winter clothes for themselves or for their children. We also know that the population of homeless is growing in the triad. we want to be able to help with coats or covers.

Ladies are sewing Psalm 119:76
“May your unfailing love be my comfort” on a tag in the covers reminding the owner that God is our source of comfort. A collection box is in the foyer for you to drop any coat or cover into.

Piedmont International Fellowship

The Piedmont International Fellowship is a Christian organization which seeks to provide opportunities for international college students to learn about and experience friendships with Christian Americans and other internationals in the Greater Greensboro area and by so doing, helps to develop peaceful world relations through these personal relationships.

Assistance is offered in helping students make adjustments to our U.S. culture with events planned throughout the year. Students from all religions and ethnic backgrounds are welcome.
